Earning a technology apprenticeship is a badge of honor. Although apprenticeships are becoming more commonplace, applicants are selected based on a particular mix of characteristics and talent. This makes it harder to come by, and once embedded in the apprenticeship, you are still competing to land a full-time job after the apprenticeship period. So, how can you make the most of your time, regardless of whether you win a full-time job at the end of your apprenticeship?
Soak in the learning opportunities
Let’s start with the easiest way to make the most of a technology apprenticeship: learn. This is the purpose and ultimately what will land you your next job.
Be sure to keep a journal of the projects you tackled. Most technology apprentices have few jobs to list on their resume, but the wealth of knowledge gathered through an apprenticeship will give you a leg up. Beyond your resume, you’ll also be able to look back on your journal and pull from the ideas you used on previous projects to find solutions for new projects.
Build a Portfolio
Creating a simple website with a portfolio of completed projects will expand your opportunities as you become searchable online. Make sure that the information you use within your portfolio is not confidential.
As you gather testimonials (see below), you can also include them to add credibility to your work.
Network
The people you meet throughout your career are part of your network. Keeping in touch and always being friendly can lead you to the best job opportunities, so during your technology apprenticeship, be sure to gather personal email addresses and connect through LinkedIn so that you can keep in touch.
Gather References
As you write your resume in the future, you will always need at least three references. Should you decide to start your own business, you will need testimonials. Having these already written and ready to present will make life easier. Request recommendations through LinkedIn so that you can always find them quickly and they are independently verified.
