What Duties Are Expected of a Data Scientist?

A Data Scientist, or Data Science Professional, is responsible for overseeing the collection, storage and interpretation of data for businesses. Their duties include sifting through data points to create organized categories, comparing data points to current company processes and writing reports outlining business predictions or proposals.” (Indeed.com)

To be successful, a data scientist must be able to collect data through automated processes, using an AI-derived model, usually on a platform such as ServiceNow, Salesforce, Netsuite, or similar.

The reporting factor of a data scientist is vital to the organization’s success. Often, the abundance of data causes a bottleneck, meaning that a company’s leadership is unable to use the data collected to project and predict the company’s future. In these situations, it can be valuable for a data scientist to collaborate with others that can translate the data into an actionable report. 

What Qualifications Are Needed To Become A Data Scientist?

Technical Qualifications: 

According to Indeed.com, these are the technical skillsets needed for a data scientist:

  • Ability to communicate complex data in a simple, actionable way
  • Ability to visualize data in the most effective way possible for a given project or study
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with machine learning and AI
  • Familiarity with data management tools

Non-Technical Expectations: 

While technical skills are important, most organization will put equal stock into the characteristics of their employees, to be sure they are a good fit for the company. These are the characteristics that will be needed to succeed in the job:

  • A collaborative mindset.
    Can you work well with others and accept ideas other than your own? How do you handle having your work edited? 
  • Good communication skills.
    You will need to present information to people in other departments. The ability to translate complex ideas into easy-to-understand information is vital. 
  • Loyalty.
    The collection of the data can help the company grow. It can also help to spot issues before they become full-blown problems. To help the company through data, you need to be committed to the company’s success. 
  • Creativity.
    Being able to devise ways of speeding up the process, whether that means creating reports faster, or delivering information automatically, can be extremely advantageous.
