You’ve probably seen a lot of news about ChatGPT in recent weeks. Its been the center of controversy concerning college essays and in the business world. Here’s your guide to the new technology and its uses.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT describes itself as “an AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, based on the GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) language model. It uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to text inputs in a conversational manner.”

In other words, it’s an AI technology that mimics human responses to user prompts. The chatbot was developed by San Francisco-based startup OpenAI, founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman, and has massive investors, namely Microsoft.

How to Access ChatGPT

ChatGPT is still in its reserach faze, so its free to use at chat.openai.com. One issue many users have reported while attempting to use the chatbot is an “at capacity” message. The tech operated using a server, and the servers are almost always full because of a considerable amount of news around the topic. As of February 1, the company has launched a premium option to enable users to continue to have access even during peak hours.

Is the Technology a Big Deal?

This technology made big news upon its release, but how much will this affect the industry? The answer lies in the size of the data this chatbot is trained on and how eerily human it sounds. You may have seen AI-generated scripts on social media like these. These scripts were trained on data from a single source, like a bunch of Bob Ross video scripts. When asked to generate a new script, they can make small phrases that make sense but not entire passages that make sense due to the relatively small amount of data they are trained on. ChatGPT is one of the most powerful language-processing AI models, with 175 billion parameters. This is why its responses are so close to human speech and why it is one of the most significant developments in AI.

The Limitations of AI chatbots

One of the most significant limitations of the technology is that it is only as smart and updated as the data it is trained on. It cant update you on the current state of lockdowns or recent news. It can also invent fictitious names or books or fail to solve math problems. This is one of the reasons we shouldn’t give tech too much credit; despite its progress in the similarity to human speech, it still can’t replace us.

The Controversy Over the Tech

Some people have expressed concern about the possibility of technology taking over for those who write press releases or email communications or enabling students to write essays in seconds. There are also concerns about the spread of misinformation through technology like this. These are legitimate concerns, especially with the limitations of the technology and the accuracy it writes with. These concerns have led to technology to detect ChatGPT for schools to catch students using chatbots and a continued expectation for developing this detection software.
