Transitioning from military service to civilian life can be a challenging process, particularly when it comes to finding a new career path. Fortunately, the technology industry offers many job opportunities well-suited to military veterans’ unique skills and experience. Here are some of the best tech jobs for transitioning military members and how to break into these fields after service. 

Cybersecurity Analyst

In the military, service members are often responsible for safeguarding sensitive information and protecting against cyber threats. As a result, many veterans have valuable experience in cybersecurity that can translate into civilian tech jobs. Cybersecurity analysts are in high demand across various industries. This is because organizations increasingly rely on digital technology and face a growing threat from hackers and cybercriminals. This job requires a deep understanding of security protocols and creative thinking to anticipate and respond to threats.

Breaking into the cybersecurity field can be overwhelming, but all transitioning military members need is a certification and skills to communicate that their military service qualifies them for this role. The military will often cover the accreditation costs for members, but this usually requires some advocacy on the veteran’s part. 

Network Administrator

Another tech job that is well-suited to military veterans is network administration. In the military, service members are often responsible for setting up and maintaining complex computer networks. This can translate well to civilian jobs in the same field. Network administrators are responsible for ensuring that an organization’s computer systems function smoothly and efficiently and that data is securely transmitted across the network.

Like cybersecurity, network administration can be high-stress, and requires quick thinking and problem-solving skills. However, veterans with experience in this field may find that their military experience gives them an edge in the civilian job market. While it isn’t always required, most positions favor applications with a bachelor’s degree. 

Software Developer

As technology plays an important role in our lives, the demand for skilled software developers is rising. Veterans with experience in coding or programming may find that they are well-suited for this field. Software developers are responsible for creating and maintaining computer programs, mobile apps, and other digital products.

While many software developers have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, veterans without this credential may still be able to break into the field through an apprenticeship. By completing a software development apprenticeship, which is increasingly popular in the field, veterans can gain practical experience. An apprenticeship will also help to build a portfolio of work that demonstrates their skills to potential employers.

Data Analyst

With the rise of big data, there is an increase in the need for professionals who can analyze and interpret large data sets. Data analysts collect, organize, and analyze data to help organizations make better decisions. Veterans with experience in data analysis may find that this field is a good fit for their skills and expertise.

Data analysis apprenticeships can be a helpful way for veterans to gain experience in this field. These apprenticeships typically provide on-the-job training. They also may include coursework in statistics, data visualization, and other related topics.

IT Project Manager

IT project managers oversee the organization’s technology project planning, implementation, and completion. This job requires strong leadership and communication skills and an ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.

Veterans with experience in project management or leadership may find that IT project management fits their skills and expertise generously. While some employers may require a bachelor’s degree in a related field, others may be willing to consider candidates with relevant experience, including military experience.
